How I Published Two AI Coloring Books on Amazon KDP in 48 Hours

Introduction

When I first heard about AI-powered coloring book creation, I was skeptical.

Like many online entrepreneurs, I’ve seen plenty of software promising easy publishing and passive income. Most of the time, the reality is much more complicated.

Instead of guessing, I decided to test the process myself.

My goal wasn’t to build a publishing empire overnight. I simply wanted to answer one question:

Can someone create and publish a real coloring book on Amazon KDP using modern AI tools?

Forty-eight hours later, I had my answer.

I successfully created and published two coloring books on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP):

  • Golden Hour
  • The Twelve Days of Golden Mischief

Here’s exactly what happened, what worked, what didn’t, and what I learned along the way.

Why I Decided to Try AI Coloring Books

I’ve always looked for ways to create digital assets that can continue generating income long after the initial work is completed.

Coloring books caught my attention because:

  • Demand continues to be strong
  • Production costs are low
  • Amazon handles printing and fulfillment
  • AI tools are making design creation much faster

Most importantly, I wanted a project that I could realistically complete and publish quickly.

The Tool I Used

For this experiment, I tested Inkrr, an AI-powered coloring book creation platform.

The software handles:

  • Book planning
  • Page generation
  • Cover creation
  • Interior PDF creation
  • KDP-ready exports

Rather than creating every page manually, I focused on concept development and book organization while the AI handled the artwork generation.

Book #1: Golden Hour

My first project was:

Golden Hour

Golden Retriever Coloring Book for Adults

The concept followed a golden retriever through a series of relaxing daily adventures.

Key features included:

  • 40 coloring pages
  • Bold and easy designs
  • Hidden tennis ball on every page
  • Designed for beginners and seniors
  • 8.5 x 8.5 format

The workflow was surprisingly straightforward:

  1. Create the book concept
  2. Review the page plan
  3. Generate pages
  4. Generate cover
  5. Download PDF files
  6. Upload to KDP

The First Problem I Encountered

Everything looked great until I uploaded the manuscript to Amazon KDP.

The KDP Previewer reported an error on one page.

A color test page included an object that extended beyond the printable margin area.

At first I assumed I had done something wrong.

After contacting support, Inkrr confirmed the issue was actually caused by a bug in their system.

To their credit:

  • They reproduced the issue
  • Fixed the layout
  • Regenerated the PDF
  • Didn’t charge additional credits

This was my first lesson:

Always review your book in KDP Previewer

Even when software says a book is “KDP Ready.”

Amazon Approved the Book

After the correction was made, I uploaded the updated manuscript.

The result:

Golden Hour was approved and published

That immediately increased my confidence in the workflow because I now had proof that:

  • The software worked
  • Amazon accepted the files
  • The process was repeatable

Book #2: The Twelve Days of Golden Mischief

Instead of stopping after one book, I wanted to test whether the process could be duplicated quickly.

For the second project, I created:

The Twelve Days of Golden Mischief

A Christmas-themed golden retriever coloring book featuring:

  • Holiday adventures
  • Snow scenes
  • Christmas decorations
  • Cozy fireplaces
  • Hidden knitted stocking challenge

This book included:

  • 40 coloring pages
  • Bold and easy style
  • Beginners and seniors focus
  • Hidden object element
  • Holiday theme

Because I already understood the workflow, the second book was much faster to create than the first.

Creating a Series

One unexpected lesson was the importance of building a series.

Instead of releasing unrelated books, I created:

Golden Retriever Adventures Coloring Books

Current titles:

  • Golden Hour
  • The Twelve Days of Golden Mischief

Future possibilities include:

  • Golden Retriever Puppies
  • Winter Adventures with Golden Retrievers
  • Golden Retriever Camping Adventures

Series branding gives readers additional books to discover and helps create a stronger author presence on Amazon.

What Surprised Me

Several things worked better than I expected.

1. The Planning Was Strong

The page outlines were actually quite creative.

They felt more like story-driven coloring books than random collections of images.

2. Amazon Approved the Files Quickly

Both books moved through review much faster than I expected.

3. Support Responded Quickly

When I encountered a formatting issue, support identified the problem immediately and fixed it.

4. The Process Became Faster

The second book took significantly less effort because I already understood the workflow.

What Didn’t Surprise Me

There were still things requiring human review.

You Must Check Every Page

AI can generate great content, but you still need quality control.

Publishing Is Not Passive

Creating the book is only part of the process.

You still need:

  • Good titles
  • Good descriptions
  • Keywords
  • Categories
  • Marketing

AI Doesn’t Replace Judgment

The best results came from reviewing, editing, and improving the AI’s suggestions.

Time Investment

Book #1: Several hours due to learning and troubleshooting

Book #2: Much faster because the workflow was already understood

Final Thoughts

The biggest lesson wasn’t that AI can create coloring books.

The biggest lesson was that modern tools can dramatically speed up the publishing process.

In less than 48 hours, I:

  • Created two coloring books
  • Published both on Amazon KDP
  • Built a book series
  • Learned an entirely new publishing workflow

Will these books become bestsellers?

I have no idea.

But I now know that creating and publishing coloring books on Amazon is far more accessible than many people realize.

And that’s a valuable lesson all by itself.
